Job Introduction
We are looking for a Social Media Executive with a love of music and entertainment to work across the BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music social media accounts – joining a creative team using short form video to help audiences discover live radio, music performances and our podcasts. This role sits in the BBC Radio central social media team that runs accounts, commissions video, visualises radio moments, and edits and optimises content for channels that reach millions every week.
BBC Radio 2 is the UK’s most listened to radio station, with a weekly audience of 13.3 million (RAJAR Q3, 2024). Radio 2 is a distinctive, mixed music and speech network, broadcasting to a broad audience which aims to appeal to all age groups over 35. The network offers entertaining, popular and specialist music programmes alongside speech-based content – including news, current affairs, documentaries, religion, arts and social action.
BBC Radio 6 Music is a radio station for music lovers with a curious spirit. We shine a light, lend an ear and give a platform to music beyond the mainstream. We are a highly distinctive network, playing and celebrating a breadth of artists and music across eras and genres. 6 Music is seeking to grow its audience, profile and reach of the network amongst the 25-44 age group.
Main Responsibilities
- Work with the Radio 2 and 6 Music Social Media Managers to create relatable, authentic, and engaging short form video, graphics and copy for our channels – bringing our audio output to life and driving listening on BBC Sounds.
- Schedule, optimise and publish posts across both networks’ social media channels.
- Support social media campaigns, reacting quickly to memes and trending moments, and devising creative and thumb-stopping formats.
- Syndicate and schedule content on non-owned channels and work with presenter, guests, and third party partners to reach new audiences.
- Work alongside other Execs and digital production teams to ensure that promotional content across the two networks and the rest of the BBC is joined up and has impact.
- Ensure that content is complied and logged for publishing in BBC social media spaces.
This role will have a Radio 2 and 6 Music focus – based in Salford or London working alongside our production teams. There will also be opportunities to work for our other music networks, podcast launches and big music events – such as Glastonbury and Radio 1’s Big Weekend, as well as Radio 2 and 6 Music’s flagship events – Radio 2 in the Park and 6 Music Festival.
Are you the right candidate?
You will need to demonstrate the following:
- A knowledge of Radio 2 and 6 Music and audio platforms, and insights into the interests of our audiences.
- A passion for music and strong awareness of popular culture in digital spaces.
- A track record of creating engaging music and entertainment content for social media audiences. We will ask you to share links and examples as part of your application.
- A strong understanding of how audiences use social media platforms (especially Instagram and TikTok) and how they find content in these spaces.
- 1 or more years’ experience of working with a publisher, radio broadcaster or equivalent account sharing social media content.
- Strong video and image editing skills – must be able to work within the Adobe Creative Suite, be a mobile filming expert and use a variety of apps, filters, and sound options to create world class, thumb stopping social formats for platforms such as TikTok or Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.
- Familiarity with social media analytics and how to use them to inform content decisions and choices.
- Confidence in communicating your ideas, and persuading teams to collaborate at all levels whether they are show teams, music performers or guests visiting our stations or podcast studios.
